Now that May has arrived and the weather has started warming up, you may be thinking about digging the mower out of your shed and giving the lawn a good mow if you haven’t done so already. But Sir David Attenborough is asking you to hold off until at least June.
The “No Mow May” campaign was first launched in 2019 with the aim of allowing wild flowers to grow and support pollinators such as bees, butterflies, moths and beetles. This is an important time of year in the life cycle of these insects, which are an essential but rapidly disappearing part of our ecosystem.
As Attenborough stated in a recent BBC Wild Isles nature documentary, our flying insects have declined by 60% in the last 20 years, and many of our bird and mammal species are now at risk of extinction. We should be doing everything we can to reverse these trends.
